IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS)

IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS)
It is characterized by abdominal pain altered bowel habits and includes diarrhea or diarrhea alternating with constipation. Symptoms are typically intermittent but may be continuous and if present for more than three months it is diagnosed as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. About 15% of individuals suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome without realizing it
SYMPTOMS
Abdominal pain and discomfort that is relieved by defecation or associated with change in the frequency and/or consistency of the stools.
There may be associated distension of abdomen, sensation of incomplete evacuation and passage of mucus with stools.
Patients presenting with abdominal pain in absence of altered bowel habits or with absence of abdominal pain may be considered to have IBS if no alternative explanation for the symptoms is found. However patients with otherwise unexplained chronic constipation in absence of abdominal pain are generally considered to have a distinct disorder.
In addition to above symptoms IBS may have symptoms referring to upper gastrointestinal tract which includes-
-Non-cardiac chest pain,
-Heart burn,
-Dysphagia and
-Globus sensation.
One may even present with generalized fatigue and malaise.
CAUSES AND PATHOLOGY
IBS is often considered as functional disorder because no structural, biochemical or infectious cause has yet been found.
What has been observed is a disordered motor or sensory function of the gastro-intestinal tract.
Functional disorders are often attributed erroneously to stress, but this is not always true.
The food moves through the intestines through coordination of muscular movements. IBS can be regarded as a loss in the coordination of these movements.
IBS is often an outcome of a complex interaction between psychological and physical factors.
TREATMENT
Homoeopathic treatment is extremely effective in cases of IBS and the patient is usually relieved within 15 days. Our treatments are absolutely free from side-effects and we make sure that every possible effort is taken to provide you the best of possible results.
What if the disease is left untreated?
Irritable bowel syndrome is not a life-threatening condition and cannot result in cancer or serious intestinal disease, however if treated early the patient can avoid lot of discomfort and social embarrassment.
PREVENTION
Since the triggers for IBS are unknown, it's not possible to advise particular precautions to prevent the condition.
DIAGNOSIS
There is as such no blood test, X-ray or scan that will diagnose IBS. So it is the symptoms that guide to the diagnosis of IBS.
